I live near Atlanta and need to know if it is too late to plant pansies.?

I grow professionally for a local nursery in Alpharetta,Ga. We started growing pansies in august for the winter season. In Georgia pansies are planted in the fall for the winter. Have you not noticed all the landscapers pulling out the summer anuals, they are replacing them with pansies, snapdragons, ornamental kales and cabbages, even iceland poppies. We grow all these plants and sell to landscapers not retail. When you do go to your local home and garden store the main thing you want to look for is a good root system, sqweeze the bottom of the pot to loosen the soil and gently pull it out of the pot and look at the roots, they should be white and netted, no soil should fall off the bottom, this is important your plant need a head start and if your plant has alot of leaves and no root system to support it, then that is a strike against it going through the winter. Most plants you buy at the home depot or lowes are grown in another state, maybe you can call your local nurseries and see if they buy from georgia growers. Pansies will freeze, but by mid morning they'll be thawed out and fine, they are the miracle plant in the winter, but they are not for the summer. That is why you don't see them for sell ine the spring and summer. Our summers are just to hot for them, so don't feel bad when they become leggy in the spring just pull them up and plant your summer annuals. Violas are in the same family with pansies they just have smaller flowers. You can plant until the ground is frozen, but the sooner the better for a good root system. HAPPY PLANTING!!!!!

panies are best planted in the fall for a spring showing! so go ahead and plant and fertlize also.
Reply:From what I know about Pansies, it's never too late or too early to plant them. Here in Central NY, they even stay green all winter under the snow. Have at it!
Reply:at home depot, i have seen winter pansies. i think they would be fine to plant now..the regular variety is done for this year..
