What flowering plants to people plant this time of year? pansies?

No pansies don't like hot weather. I planted my pansies in Feb and they lived until the weather turned warmer. Now is the time to plant geraniums, petunias, begonias, marigolds, (for sun) and impatiens, coleus(for shade)

Here in southern Louisiana, zone8-9, I plant Lantana, because you really can't kill it. It does beautifully in full sun, and even in a freeze, it will come back. I believe it's an african native, and produces lots of flowers all season (april till frost!).

Ferns do need shade--but I have an asparagus fern (if it is a real fern) in full sun that's gorgeous!
Reply:where im at its already getting too warm for pansies, they like the cool weather : fall and early spring. We are planting: petunias, moss roses, geraniums, marigolds, salvia, ageratum, dianthus...
Reply:I agree: Pansies like cool and moist best of all. In the UK we use them as winter bedding/container plants: plant them in early autumn (september) and you get an initial burst of flowering, followed by a few flowers over winter then another burst of flowers in spring. right now, my pansies are starting to die off (they're old and it's getting too warm and dry for them).

Right now I am planting out the usual summer bedding plants: ageratum, lobelia, allysum, marigolds, nigella and petunia. these all have great flowers, but for colourful foliage which provides a contrast to the flowers i am also planting cineraria (silver grey leaves) and coleus (multi coloured leaves). for areas which are particularly dry and sunny, i am planting portulaca (moss rose), nasturtium and godetia.

ferns are great for gardens where you have cool, moist shady areas (they dislike hot and dry areas), but they also do well in containers and hanging baskets as long as they stay shady and moist.
